Our Fall 2008 Sale

Old Town Auctions announces its annual week before Thanksgiving sale on November 22-23, 2008 at the Myersville Fire Hall, 301 Main Street in Myersville, Md., featuring some truly unique and unusual items. An online catalog is now available. Click here or on Nov. Catalog link below.

Among the featured categories are Americana, Antique Toys, Antique Advertising, Coin-Ops, Country Store items, Movie, Magic and Advertising Posters, Furniture, Black Americana, Lamps, Civil War collectibles, and a fabulous carved Cigar Store Indian.

Saturday’s session starting at 10am will be highlighted by over a dozen Baranger store displays. These remarkable and sought after animated store displays hail from a California Estate, and are rarely seen in such quantity.  This is a uncommon opportunity.

Automotive toys will be plentiful with a very rare Distler "Pinched" Toy, in its original box, leading the way. There are three boxed Jeu de Course’s, two sporting different race car themes and one with an aviation motif, as well as a boxed Ranlite Golden Arrow, a boxed Agajanian # 98 Racer, a Tocshi Ferrari, many race cars, motorcycles, airplanes, fire trucks, model and toy trains, are geared-up and ready, and will be featured in this diverse sale.

A Coney Island giant dip roller coaster and a rare boxed Knapp 1908 K&D merry-go-round head a large grouping of circus related toys, which also include tin wind-up clowns, a large Gunthermann clown, a Connestoga roller coaster and a Bing Ferris wheel. The sale also features an extraordinary life-size Schlitz rotating clown animated display with it’s original motorized base and a colorful Alan Hershel carved carousel goat and  carousel horses, as well as several tin freak show panels.  In addition to circus toys and amusements, the auction features several character toys and related collectibles, including a three foot tall Popeye, and a Froggy Gremlin store display.  A collection of BB Guns including a rare Daisy Bayonet and many other toys are still to be unpacked, so there will be many surprises at this auction.

Other items include a stellar Capital Airlines display model Lockheed Constellation in its original shipping crate, a great clockwork butcher nodder and a wonderful animated monkey band.

The Coin-ops section of this sale will feature four life-sized figural carved wood slot machines, three of which are signed by Frank Polk.  These original carved slots with cowboy, miner and sheriff motifs are joined by RJ. Moore bronze sculptures of Polk slots.  In addition, an original Holcomb and Hoke popcorn machine complete with an optional peanut roaster from the early 1900’s is sure to be a crowd pleaser.  There are jukeboxes from Rockola and Whirlitizer, Mutoscopes, an early Digger machine and novelties from the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair, including "Hitler’s Head" and more.

Bicycles will be pedaling to the podium with a Pope Volunteer Colombia Ordinary high wheel bike heading the pack, followed closely by a Schwinn Phantom, Western Wheel Works’ Crescent 1890 tandem among others.

Mixing in will be an array of advertising, including a Coca Cola cardboard circus window display, salesman sample cooler, along with signs, clocks, toys, and some very nice vending machines.   Root beer and other advertising will be and well represented in this auction along with other soda, tobacco and miscellaneous advertising items.

There are many crossover collectibles, such as a Laurel and Hardy cardboard sign for Old Gold advertising the movie “Babes in Toyland” a well as a spectacular 1930’s unused 10 X 13 foot linen mounted paper lithographed billboard poster of an Austin Car. A very large collection of over one hundred Movie Posters will be making its way to the auction block along with several Magic, Circus and Advertising Posters.

Sunday’s sale starting at noon will be truly a mixed bag of unusual items. There will be an array of collectibles featured in this eclectic auction, early lighting featuring a Duffner & Kimberly "Adams" pattern lamp and a Mueller Freres Art Glass lamp will be included in this auction.  The sale will also embrace high quality antiques and decorative items, including three Black Forrest carved bear chairs and curiosities featuring an amazing collection of wild game mounts:  Hippopotamus, Water Buffalo and more.

Furniture will be highlighted by a Wooton rotary desk, and joined by several pieces of original Stickley and other unusual furniture. An exceptional, early, hand-carved cigar store Indian maiden probably carved by John Cromwell is featured in this diverse auction, as well as folk art figural lodge signs, several Carousel Animals, and related collectibles.  Several Catalin and other Radios, early Televisions, a nice selection of early Telephones, a Black Americana collection featuring a very unusual KKK Grand Dragon clicker toy and a wide array of various collectibles will fill out Sunday's Auction. A large grouping of country store display cases will be offered to house your treasures, as well as past (and future!) purchases. There is even a Rocket Motor from the NASA Space Shuttle.

Civil War buffs will be pleased with the Soistman Regimental Drum, with original painted eagle and paper label.  This important historic relic will be accompanied by an assortment of Pistols, Rifles including a documented Confederate Sharps, Swords, Images, Paper and much more to suit the discriminating civil war collector.
